REPLICA OF AN OLD HYDRAULIC PUMPING SYSTEM TAKEN FROM
A 16TH CENTURY PRINT

Hydraulic system

From the earliest "tympan", (a sort of drum propelled by a man walking inside it to turn it like a wheel), to the simple hand-pump, standard nowadays, man has never stopped inventing machines for raising water to houses situated at a higher level than the source of water itself.
In this system, the pump was powered by the paddlewheel, which was turned using the river's current.
Pipes carried the water from the storage tank to the houses.
