Some private houses, (especially those belonging to well-off families), were equipped with filters made of sandstone, often decorated with the family's coat of arms, or with scenes from village or religious life. Water from the well was poured into the vessel to filter out all impurities. The filter was made up of a porous lining with layers of crushed sandstone, wood, charcoal, sand, and wool clippings from blankets underneath. Click on the picture to go back to the Museum |
