STREET FOUNTAIN

Street fountain

The street fountain is a sort of ancestor of our present mains water distribution system.
Long before individual homes had their own connection to a water supply, street fountains were found in every village street. Some villages had thousands of them. In certain villages they were still in use in the 1950's, but were connected to the pressure mains.
To use them, the inhabitants obtained a numbered key, by paying a fee to the local authority.
A law governed the drawing of water in this way.
